Pedlar River Bikepacking

September 24 - September 25

This is a two-day bike-packing adventure for CBC members that includes overnight camping in the George Washington National Forest on the Pedlar River near the Lynchburg Reservoir. The two-day route is a mix of unpaved and paved surfaces.

Day 1 will include some hilly terrain beginning with an overall descent down into Buena Vista, VA and rolling through the town to a gradual climb on gravel along Robinson Gap Road back up and under the Parkway followed by a gravel descent to Panther Falls Road to a campsite.

Day 2 will include a more difficult climb on gravel back up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and down Jordan Road to Pedlar River Road to a gradual ascent back the Parkway. The route then proceeds to a gravel road descent to Zinks Mill School Road (gravel) and Bradley Lane, ascending back to the Parkway and back to the Whetstone Ridge Visitor Center.

Route: This route will be split into two days, with camping on the Pedlar River. The updated routes will be sent to interested participants ahead of time.

Notes:

Camping options are primitive dispersed camping sites with no services. Be prepared to bike-pack all your needed equipment and supplies. This includes tent camping, having your own meals, and filtering water from nearby mountain streams.

This ride will be limited to 8 bike-packers (camp site limitations) and will be on a first come first serve basis.

Start time will be determined later and communicated with the participants.

Jeff Deacon and David Lonnquest, CBC club members, will be leading this ride and are available for any questions or discussions on bike-packing gear and supplies.

Please feel free to contact Jeff or David personally or Jeff at jeff@charlottesvillebicycleclub.org, if interested.

NOTE: As of 01/01/2022, we have become a member-supported club.  We encourage all of our cycling friends to join us.  For new riders, our club insurance covers non-members of the club for their first ride only.  Thanks.

We are planning additional rides each week, so stay tuned!  If you are interested in helping to organize a group ride for the Club, please contact us!

For details on how group rides are categorized, check out the Ride Classification guidelines.

Requirements For Riders

All riders are required to have a helmet; a tail light, Road ID and a rear-view mirror is strongly recommended.  You are also expected to have adequate fluids and a road-worthy bicycle in good repair.  Many rides, but not all, will include the opportunity to stop at a store to replenish supplies.

You should be prepared to fix a flat tire and perform other minor repairs on the road side.  If you are new to cycling and are not comfortable with these procedures, don’t let that stop you.  However, you might want to talk to a more experienced member before the ride so the group is prepared to help if necessary.

Safety On The Road

The club considers safety to be our very highest priority.  Please review the information on the Safety Page before you join us for a ride.

We hope that you will find this site helpful; your questions and comments are welcomed.
