Are you looking to dust off a bike in your basement? I’m looking forward to riding with you! My suggestion is to start with the bike shop and make sure your bike is in good condition, well adjusted, and that you are comfortable operating and riding it. Your first ride should be about 10 miles. I like riding to the bottom of Sugar Hollow reservoir: park across from the Piedmont Store (2958 Brown’s Gap Turnpike). From there, just take Sugar Hollow road. It’s a beautiful ride, there aren’t many cars and those cars are used to runners and cyclists. No turns. When the hill gets very steep after 4.5 miles, turn around, you don’t want to climb along the dam! Or just ride anywhere near you on a flattish road and do an out and back. There is also a portion of the Rivanna trail that is paved but it’s short, good for kids (starts at Riverview Park). Once you are comfortable on the bike, you can be more ambitious and look to do 20 miles. You will find that the challenge for a longer ride is not necessarily muscle but positioning (neck and butt will get sore). After the time change, I hope to offer monthly beginner rides and I hope to meet you.
